In years 5 and 6, we were lucky enough to receive a visit from the Mayor of Barnsley (Cllr Caroline Makinson) who visited us to award some of our Year 6 children with certificates for a competition that they entered last year. The competition was for children to draw their Key Worker heroes from the Pandemic. The winning entries were then created into a Bronze Relief which has formed part of the Covid Memorial Sculpture and can be seen in Barnsley Town Centre. The five children who also entered, but didn't win were also awarded a certificate. Well done everyone! Whilst the Mayor was here, we also asked if she could present our Learners of the Week certificates which she was more than happy to do. In class 7, we have been started a new unit in Science called Evolution and Inheritance. We have begun to learn what evolution means and just how long it can take for changes to happen! To understand this better, we created our own creature that could survive in our school woodland environment. Mrs Gollick then told us our creature had to evolve as a result of the environment changing. The three different environments were: flooded area, ice age and volcanoes erupting due to global warming. Take a look at our creations and how we chose to evolve them. Here is our class photo from World Book Day. I love how many of the children chose to dress up as their favourite book character. What a day we had! :)
As part of our History Unit - Vikings and Anglo Saxons - the children have researched what a Viking prow is, what they were used for and used the internet to gather some ideas of what they look like into a Word Document. Then they used their sketching skills to create their own Viking Prow design and made this out of clay. Next lesson, we will be having a look to see how our final product compares to our design. The children have been working hard all term on a song written by Mr Ramskill, our percussion teacher. Have a look at their final performance. We have had the BEST time visiting the National Space Centre in Leicester. All of year 5/6 went as we are currently learning all about Earth and Space. The day was amazing with the highlight being a 360 degree planetarium show which blew our minds! The children were incredibly well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Take a look at some of our photos from the day - there are 140 to enjoy :) Completed Headdresses We have recently completed our Greek Headdresses and we are pleased with our efforts. Take a look at our finished products. Art - Creating Greek Headdresses In our Art lessons this term we have been designing and creating our own Greek Headdresses. We have been incredibly resilient as we started to create our design with wire which we found tricky to manipulate and shape. We then used Mod Rock to create shape to our headdresses and allowed it to set. We then enjoyed an afternoon painting and adding embellishments to them. Have a look at our photos at some of us at work. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, the annual Barnsley Music Festival was unable to take place at the Metrodome. Instead the children joined a virtual festival and even joined in with a piece of music that they had been practising. The children also had the opportunity to watch children from other schools perform. We are very proud of our children for their efforts and are also grateful to Mr Lennon who tutors Class 7 every week. Electrical CircuitsThis week we have been learning all about electricity. The children have been working incredibly hard and have been excited about their learning. They have worked collaboratively to build different circuits and investigate the brightness of the bulb. SNOW DAY! I absolutely LOVE snow so when I arrived at work yesterday there was only one thing for it.....to go out and play! We got wrapped up, put on our wellies and off we went. I think myself, Mrs Larkin and Mrs Walton were possibly more excited than the children. We had SNOW much fun (see what I did there) throwing snowballs and building snowmen. For some of us, it was our first time building a one! Although......the children seemed to enjoy throwing snowballs at me just a little too much. Have a look at our photos below to see all the fun that we had. I hope everyone at home has been able to enjoy the snow just as much as we did. We are Geographers In geography we have been doing some fieldwork. First, we recapped the eight points of a compass and studied a map of our school grounds. Then, with a partner, we directed each other around the grounds. We had to remember to keep orientating the map as we moved around.
Learner of the Week - 4.12.20 This amazing young man has been trying phenomenally hard in his writing and has improved drastically since the start of September. Mrs Webb and I are so proud of him! Check out his Evacuee letter home. Performance Reading Every week, the children learn how to read with prosody and get the chance to practise in front of the class. These girls asked if they could perform the poem We Refugees after practising it together. I hope you will agree how brave and talented they are in their performance. Learner of the Week - 27.11.20 This member of our Class 7 has been working their socks off at everything even if she is finding something tricky! Well done and keep up the hard work. Learner of the Week - 20.11.20 This week, this young lady created a fabulous textured hand using different types of pencil. The children were given a range of H and B pencils to practise drawing texture. How fantastic is her art work? Marvellous Maths Last week in Maths, we were exploring factors, factor pairs and common factors. We used cubes to help work out what factors some numbers had by arranging them into arrays. Let There Be Light! In Science we have started a new unit all about LIGHT! On Friday, we used torches to investigate what shadows are and how they can change depending on the position of the light source. We learned that light can not travel through opaque objects and there is no gap between the object and the shadow. We then had a go at creating some scientific diagrams to show this which was a tricky task! Take a look at our the photos below to see the shadows we created. We are Geographers! In Geography we are learning about The United Kingdom. So far we have learnt the four countries, what a county is and some of the major towns and cities. Here we are using atlases to find out more.
Children in Need Today, we have come together to celebrate Children in Need. The children have made a great effort and all donated 50p to the charity. We have loved being cosy and warm in our PJs! Learner of the Week! Here is our Learner of the Week! This young lady received her award for always being so helpful and conscientious in the classroom. All teachers would benefit from having her in their classroom - Mrs Webb and I are lucky to have her. PE - Basketball In PE, Mr Gorner has been teaching us all about Basketball. Before we learned some of these skills, we had to warm up. Take a look at the photos to see our efforts. Pronoun Fun Today, in Literacy we have been learning all about PRONOUNS! To make this a little bit more exciting we played a game. The children were put into teams and were each given a sentence that had 3 pronouns missing (words that we use instead of repeating the same noun over and over again). Each team had a pile of pronouns which they took in turn to turn over. If it fit anywhere in their sentence, they got to keep it. If not, they had to put it down (face up) for another team mate to steal if they wanted to when it was their turn. The winner was the person who managed to complete their sentence first, WON. The children got quite competitive and wanted to play again tomorrow.. WW2 Bake Off! Before we broke up for half term, we had a full week of Design Technology in the afternoons. We linked what have learned in History about rationing and the food that was available during the time into our designs for our own fruit bun. To begin with, we learned about seasonality and tasted some fruit. Everyone was super well behaved and every child tried EVERYTHING! Some of us were surprised to find out that we liked more than we thought we would! After we had tried the fruits and knew what our favourites were, we then designed what our fruit bun would have in it. The next day, we then made our buns down in the Art Room where we worked in groups to mix the batter (Mrs Gollick did not manage to get any pictures of this unfortunately as she was running around like a headless chicken helping all the children). We then divided the mixture between everyone in each group and added our chosen fruit to the bottom. Then came the best bit - eating one! The majority of the class enjoyed them with only a few disliking their creation.
